Why I Teach Music

My parents put me in piano lessons when I was six years old, and by fifth grade I had joined choir. Music quickly became the backdrop of my childhood, from arranging concerts for my family during the holidays to accompanying my high school choir at competitions.

I never imagined pursuing music beyond high school until my choir director inspired me to consider music education as a career. I went on to study piano and choral education at the University of Nebraska and Texas Lutheran University, later completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Texas State University. The combination of music and psychology shaped the way I teach today, with equal focus on technical skill and personal growth.

Music is more than something I do. It grounds me, inspires me, and challenges me. Because I have been both the nervous beginner and the confident performer, I know how to guide students through every stage of learning, from their very first notes to standing proudly on stage at a recital.

I believe lessons should build more than musical skill. They teach accountability, perseverance, and confidence. That is why I expect my students to practice regularly, participate in recitals, and commit to lessons for the long term. Those habits create internal transformation: young learners who take pride in their growth and carry that confidence into every area of life, and adults who discover the joy of creating music with their own hands.

For me, teaching is not just about music. It is about shaping life-long musicians and resilient individuals.

My Approach to Learning

Every student is different, and I believe lessons should reflect that. While giving every student an equal chance to succeed, I also custom tailor each lesson to the student’s needs. I incentivize practice with students through stickers and Ms. Brittney’s beloved treasure box, and I ask for their input on the songs they want to learn.

Structure and accountability are key parts of my approach. Students thrive when they know what is expected of them, and I provide clear goals paired with encouragement at every step. I set a high standard, but I celebrate progress just as much as achievement because small wins lead to big breakthroughs.

I also believe that music should be engaging and meaningful. That means balancing classical repertoire with music students bring to me from movies, video games, and their imagination. I help each student find joy in their own voice! I encourage students to explore multiple instruments and to sing while they play piano, guitar, or ukulele. I emphasize learning through repetition and memorization, and I love when families make music together. When siblings learn side by side, I create opportunities for them to challenge each other in a healthy, supportive space.

My ultimate goal is to guide students on a journey that begins in elementary school and continues until they graduate high school. Along the way, they gain not only a strong foundation in music, but also the confidence, discipline, and joy that will stay with them long after their lessons end.

The Results You'll See

The impact of lessons goes far beyond learning to play an instrument. My students develop discipline, focus, and resilience, qualities that serve them in school, work, and life. They gain the confidence to perform, the accountability to practice, and the pride that comes with steady growth.

One in a Melody students are award-winning musicians who have succeeded in international exams through ABRSM, written prize-winning songs at their schools, and collectively learned thousands of songs over the last 10 years. I have seen students go from being too shy to step on a stage, to proudly playing and singing their favorite music like rockstars.

Learning to read music is the number one goal for every student at One in a Melody, and every single student who has come through the studio has achieved it. Many have gone on to play in bands and orchestras in middle school and high school, to write and perform original songs, and even to develop programs that combine music and mental health awareness in their schools. These students not only grow as musicians, but also as leaders who use their creativity to positively impact their communities.

For young learners, lessons in piano, guitar, ukulele, or voice provide stability and a sense of accomplishment at a formative age. For adults, they offer a satisfying creative outlet, the challenge of building new skills and neural pathways, and the joy of making music with their own hands and voices.

No matter the age or instrument, the results are the same: students who are proud of what they have achieved, families who see their child grow in confidence, and a lasting connection to music that can enrich every stage of life.
